Renewed clashes have taken place between Mapuche Indian farmers and Chilean police, in a continuation of a long-standing dispute arising from the development of the forestry industry on what the Mapuche see as their ancestral land. The police have accused the Mapuche of occupying private land and sabotaging equipment as tensions have escalated following the death of a Mapuche man in a clash with security forces in August. Although Chile remains one of the region's most stable polities, a rise in disenfranchisement amongst indigenous peoples would put downside pressure on the social stability component of our short-term political risk
