Fiscal deterioration in the Dominican Republic has raised concerns that the government of President Leonel Fernández will struggle to come up with financing for the upcoming legislative and municipal election in May 2010. This follows a request for DOP7bn from the electoral board. However, Economy and Planning Minister Temístocles Montas has reaffirmed the government's commitment to the election process, assuring that all necessary resources will be made available for the poll. We previously highlighted that the 2010 legislative election will be crucial for President Fernández, following the recent constitutional amendments, which will keep the elected legislature in place until 2016, when Fernández aims to run for top office again.
