BMI believes that attempts to heal the rift in Mexico's left-wing Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD) are unlikely to bear fruit, with the party's charismatic former presidential candidate, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, so far refusing to participate in the selection of candidates for July's mid-term congressional elections. The leader of the PRD in Mexico's senate rejected allegations in the local press that he had asked López Obrador to submit a list of candidates for the elections, stating that he had simply asked for Obrador's 'opinion' on the subject, in order to prevent bitter infighting within the PRD which would severely hurt the party's electoral chances in July.
