On September 25 members of the Policía Federal Preventiva (PFP) confronted elements of the Agencia Federal de Investigación (AFI), after the latter protested in opposition of government proposals to absorb the AFI into the ranks of the federal police. PFP officers are at the forefront of President Felipe Calderón's battle against the cartels, however their frequent confrontations with other police agencies in Mexico, many of which are alleged to have close links with the cartels, have already created much resentment. We believe this confrontation is further evidence of the president's problems in combating spiralling levels of violence in the country.
