The political climate in Venezuela is deteriorating at an alarming pace with President Hugo Chávez adopting an even more authoritarian style. We touted the possibility back in 2007 that Chávez may attempt to push through his failed constitutional reforms, and this appears to be happening. On the eve of the expiration of his decree powers, which were set up in February 2007 under the 'Enabling Bill' to give the president the power to adopt sweeping socialist reforms, Chávez rushed through 26 laws, which range from setting up a civilian militia to expropriating goods from private businesses and increasing state control
