After Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez patched up his differences with his Colombian counterpart on July 11, bilateral relations appear to have turned sour again. On July 27 Chávez issued an attack Colombia's Defence Minister, Juan Manuel Santos, calling for Uribe to sack him and implying that relations will remain uneasy while Santos remains in office. Given the success of the Colombian military in fighting the FARC rebels of late, we expect Santos to remain in his position, which implies that Venezuela-Colombian relations will remain unstable. That said, we do not see any threat to trade ties for the foreseeable future.
