Peru's federal government is facing fierce opposition to its port privatisation programme, which seeks to raise private sector investment into expanding port facilities. Trade unions have called for a referendum and demand greater assurance of job security and checks to Chilean ownership of Peru's port facilities. A more than a century old maritime dispute between Chile and Peru has kept diplomatic ties tense, with prospects of Chilean participation in the privatisations scheme increasing opposition to the proposed move.
