The Colombian government's successful rescue operation in July, which saw the release of former presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt, has been praised by the Ecuadorian authorities. That said, there is little to suggest that diplomatic relations between the two countries will improve in the short term. Ecuador is deliberating over possible trade restriction with its Andean neighbour in response to its grievances over a Colombian attack on Ecuadorian soil earlier this year. With this in mind, we see little scope for improvement in the regional profile component of our short-term political risk ratings for both countries.
