Strikes at several Peruvian mines have been suspended following a ruling by the labour ministry on July 2 that the nationwide mining strikes were illegal. This provided employers with the green light to fire mining workers who failed to show up for work. Mining workers across Peru put down their tools and staged a nationwide walkout on June 30 in an effort to pressure congress into introducing new legislation on profit sharing and improving pensions for mining workers.
