Crime, with its capacity to scare off tourists, was again coming into close focus in the Bahamas in mid-2008. In May two local youths were charged with the attempted murder of an off-duty US police officer, who was shot during an attempted robbery. The officer, John Caspar, had intervened to help a woman whose purse was being snatched in an area near the home of former Bahamian Prime Minister Perry Christie. He survived the attack. Separately Jamaican police said they had seized a powerboat carrying a 1,600lbs marijuana shipment valued at US$4.2mn, which had been destined for the Bahamas. Inspector
