With regional elections scheduled for November, we expect to see a rise in short-term political risk as President Hugo Chávez, under increased pressure from a strengthening right-wing opposition, seeks to rally round his supporters using nationalistic rhetoric. We see the progress made by the opposition parties, which have consolidated and become more moderate in an attempt to challenge Chávez, as a positive for the long-term balance of power within the Venezuelan political system.
