A week after he was dismissed from his post by President Álvaro Colom, former Interior Ministry adviser Victor Rivera was killed in his home, by gangsters, it is suspected. Local authorities believe that the motive was revenge, as the interior ministry had cracked down hard on kidnapping gangs, while critics of Rivera claim that he had links to death squads.
