The opposition bloc Alianza por Chile received a boost in April when the chamber of deputies voted to suspend Education Minister Yasna Provoste for 'serious neglect of duties' in relation to a scandal involving US$500mn of state grants to private schools. Her fate is now in the hands of the senate. If Provoste is impeached following the upcoming vote in the senate, she would be barred from holding public office for five years and would become the first minister from a Concertación government to be impeached since the return to democracy in 1990.
