Ranking an impressive 23rd out of 179 countries globally in Transparency International's 2007 Transparency Corruption Index, Barbados continues to make improvements to government transparency. For example, the Auditor General, an independent office that scrutinises the public accounts, has recently established a website on which its reports from 2004 are published. Going further, Minister of State for Finance and Energy Darcy Boyce has recently suggested amending legislation which would strengthen the powers of the Auditor-General's Department, for the office to monitor more closely government contract procedures. This may provide a boost to our ratings going forward.
