Although full-year figures have yet to be released by the Dominican Republic's central bank, we estimate that remittances barely increased in 2007 to US$2.79bn (from US$2.74bn in the previous year). Looking ahead, a projected slowdown in the US is likely to contain remittances growth in 2008, although government efforts to improve the transaction process could soften the blow.
