As the investigation continues, police believe that the bomb that went off on February 15 was in fact an assassination attempt against senior anti-drugs official, Luis Rosales Gamboa, deputy head of public security in the Mexico City government. While the source of attempt has not been determined, officials believe that it was a retaliatory move ordered by drug traffickers from outside the city, having been hit hard by a series of recent police raids and arms seizures. Although unsuccessful, if drug cartels were behind the bombing attempt, it would represent an escalation in their attacks against law enforcement officials.
