Álvaro Colom is due to be inaugurated as president on January 14. There to witness the beginning of his four-year term is a 'who's-who' of Latin American politics, including all of the Central American heads of state. We see this as an opportunity for Guatemala to make diplomatic headway within the region, as well as for Colom to make build cooperative ties with countries like Chile and Colombia, which have offered their expertise to assist Guatemala's domestic security problems. Importantly, Colom has already met with Panamanian President Martin Torrijos over several regional issues, including a trade deal between the two
