A leftist opponent of President Uribe has won the county's second most important political position of mayor of Bogotá. The victory of Samuel Moreno will give his left-wing Polo Democrático Independiente Party (PDI) confidence for the 2010 presidential elections. Nevertheless, although 21 candidates were killed during campaigning across the country - mostly at the hands of the left-wing FARC - Uribe will retain considerable support from the significant reduction in violence and political intimidation and improved security since the 2003 local elections.
