Venezuela's President, Hugo Chávez, announced on 1 September his intent to re-join the Andean Community of Nations (CAN), after he withdrew in response to Colombia's and Peru's decision to seek free trade deals with the US. Chávez has received support from Bolivia and Ecuador, and more recently Colombia, but the main obstacle to entry will be from Peru, due to Chávez's support for Peruvian opposition. While the intention to join CAN is good news for Venezuela's relations with the Andean community, we feel it stems from fears that troublesome relations with Brazil may bloc their entry into Mercosur.
