Uruguayan President Tabaré Vázquez met with US officials in Montevideo on July 11 to discuss seeking closer ties between the two countries. Vázquez, who is currently the Mercosur trade bloc's rotating president, argues that Argentina's blocking of bridges over the pulp mill dispute, and their protectionist policies, are undermining the bloc, and is more interested in establishing a free trade agreement with the US, its main export market. The Argentine-Uruguayan pulp mill spat continues to weigh (albeit slightly) on Uruguay's short-term political risk rating.
