Political parties have agreed to allow house-to-house registration in the compilation of a new electoral list for the 2008 local government elections. The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), has praised the move as an endorsement of its independence, and is prepared to commence with the registration process. The move is positive, in our view, as it installs greater transparency in the official list of voters, and should help to promote free and fair elections going forward. On the back of this development, we have raised our long-term political rating to 53.3 (from 52.3).
