With late November the most likely general election date, the weakened opposition United National Congress (UNC) is holding talks with smaller opposition parties in a bid to secure a 'unity alliance', to better compete against the strength of the ruling People's National Movement (PNM) in the upcoming polls. However, it is unlikely that the Congress of the People party - a new grouping led by former UNC political leader Winston Dookeran - will join the alliance following his acrimonious split from the UNC last year. This means that the UNC vote will remain splintered, limiting its chances against the PNM.
