The Partido Liberal Radical Auténtico (PLRA), the dominant member party of the 30-strong opposition bloc known as the Concertación, has announced that it will support Fernando Lugo's election bid providing he chooses a vice president from the PLRA. The decision removes a key obstacle to Lugo, whose candidacy for the presidential election next year has been in doubt over the last few months. Lugo continues to enjoy considerable popularity in opinion polls, and if the opposition can remain united behind him - of which there is no guarantee - the upcoming ballot could represent the biggest challenge to the ruling
