Costa Rica, one of only 25 countries that recognise Taiwan, may be planning to sever ties with China's breakaway province in favour of increasing ties with China. Speculation arose in May last year when Costa Rican President Oscar Arias was re-elected for a second term, and said Costa Rica would evaluate its China policy in its national interests. Furthermore, on May 14, at the 60th World Health Assembly, Costa Rica voted against World Health Organization membership for Taiwan, which raised another alarm bell for bilateral ties between the two countries.
