Negotiations between the left-wing paramilitary group Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) and the Colombian authorities to broker a potential prisoner-hostage swap deal are stalling. The government bowed to pressure from newly-appointed French President Nicolas Sarkozy to set free FARC leader Rodrigo Granda, in the hope that the rebel group would consider the mutual release of French-Colombian politician Ingrid Betancourt. The FARC looks likely to deliver the humanitarian exchange, but according to Granda, is demanding that the government pulls troops back from the southern towns of Pradera and Florida. Such a compromise from the Colombian government appears unlikely for now.
