Dominican President Leonel Fernández has confirmed that he will be running for re-election in 2008. If re-elected it would be his second consecutive (third in total) term in office. According to polls, Fernández is favourite to succeed in the internal contest next May, which will decide the leader, despite his Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) being against the constitutional changes of 2002 that allowed consecutive re-election.
