After months of uncertainty, former Economy Minister Roberto Lavagna officially announced on January 5 that he will stand in the presidential elections on October 28 2007. Although Lavagna is well-known as the engineer of Argentina's impressive economic recovery, his path to the presidency will be impeded by considerable obstacles. Firstly, while current President Néstor Kirchner enjoys popular support of almost 60%, according to the latest opinion polls, Lavagna struggles to shore up more than 10%.
