Mario Salazar Escobar, a cousin of the former regional director of Chiledeportes (a state sports agency), confessed to authorities that he had been involved in the scandal engulfing the agency, which involved the misuse of public funds. Escobar admitted to having managed a false sports club, while having been involved with two other projects. Escobar was also linked to the Christian Democrats, which is affiliated to President Michelle Bachelet's ruling Conertación coalition.
