Costa Rica could possibly sign a free trade with Taiwan in 2007. Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian allegedly put forward the idea to President Óscar Arias, as both men attended the inauguration of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega in January. An FTA with Taiwan could be a shrewd move on Arias' part, not only in terms of boosting bilateral trade, but also because of the potential increase in foreign aid. Taiwan currently enjoys preferential trade status with four Central American countries as part of the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-Operation (APEC)
