Left-wing paramilitary group Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) has indicated that it could be willing to negotiate a conditional cease-fire with the government. In response, President Uribe is weighing up a prisoner swap deal, which some observers hope could eventually lead to increased political dialogue and the possibility of eventual peace. We are more wary, however, and believe that it will be difficult for Uribe to find a middle ground with the FARC, while maintaining US support for his hard-line domestic security strategy.
