The Paraguayan government announced that next year it will no longer grant immunity to US soldiers training in Paraguay. As part of a military co-operation accord with the US, the country accommodated around 400 US marines in 2005 for humanitarian work and anti-terrorist training. The military ties with the US have already caused controversy earlier in the year between the government and the opposition, as US marines had allegedly been involved in killing 30 members of the Paraguayan Peasants' Movement. Although the decision to stop granting immunity to US soldiers could ease domestic political tensions, it continues to threaten relations
