Christmas Day signaled an end of an era in telecommunications in Honduras: the state-run Hondutel finally relinquished its monopoly over the vastly overpriced and inefficient international call market, as well as over the fixed line, telex and telegraphy services. This now means that foreign companies as well as Honduran-financed companies can compete in both the local market and the more lucrative international calls sector. The mobile phone sector already has outside operators – Celtel which is operated by Millicom International Cellular and Alo, now owned by Mexico’s America Movil.
