Talks have been stalled since late March in the face of growing protests from the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalists of Ecuador (CONAIE). CONAIE's latest campaign targeted not only the free-trade negotiations with the US but also demands for the nationalisation of the hydrocarbons industry. Ecuador's government is keen to kick start negotiations once again but Congress' ratification of a new hydrocarbon's bill in April has thrown the deal into jeopardy on the US side.
