The US assistant secretary of state for western hemisphere affairs, Thomas Shannon, recently met with President Néstor Kirchner in the latest manifestation of Washington’s renewed interest in the region. Shannon went as far as saying that relations between Argentina and the United States were ‘excellent’. Shannon’s visit to Argentina is likely an attempt by the US to strengthen relations between the countries in order to prevent the evolution of a growing rift between pro-Chávez and pro-US Latin American states.
