The gap is narrowing between presidential favourite Andrés Manuel López Obrador of the PRD and his closest rival, the PAN's Felipe Calderón. A poll by GEA-ISA shows the two candidates tied on 35% of the vote, with PRI leader Roberto Madrazo trailing on 29%. Clearly, we can no longer be sure of a López Obrador victory in July - support for the former Mexico City mayor has dropped over recent months while backing for former energy secretary Calderón, has risen. Indeed, we had thought that President Vicente Fox's low approval ratings would hurt any PAN candidate. However, his numbers are also improving - the latest El Universal poll shows that 66% of respondents approve of his performance.
