Labour Costs Falling
February 2010 | Ratings UpdateMexico's President Felipe Calderón has said that drug-related violent activities in the country are fuelled by the huge demand for narcotics in the neighbouring US and by easy availability of weapons there. The remarks came after a masked gunman killed at least 16 students at a party in Ciudad Juarez, a city at the forefront of the recent spike in violence, with a murder rate in 2009 making it the most violent city in the world. We view these comments as an attempt by the president to deflect growing criticism for his hardline stance in the war against the country's cartels.
