With 71% of Ecuadorian voters undecided about which candidate to vote for in October's presidential election, coupled with the fact that no single candidate holds more than 24% support, indicates that the presidency will most likely be decided by a second round vote in November. Nevertheless, the ongoing political uncertainty that has characterised Ecuador is unlikely to subside once a president has been elected. If no single candidate wins enough support to claim a popular mandate, they will face fierce opposition in congress, which may result in a political deadlock.
