January 2011 | Risk Summary

Colombian vice-president Angelino Garzón recently announced that he will lobby the US for an extension of the Andean Trade Preferences Eradication Act agreement at the end of January. The preferential trade agreement started in 1991 and gives Peru, Colombia and Ecuador beneficial tariffs for trade with the US, in return for bilateral help against narcotics traffickers in the region. At the time of writing, the agreement is set to end on February 15 following the senate's rejection of a renewal until June 2012. An extension of the agreement would bode well for continued progress in the fight against drugs, and also for the Colombian economy.
