BMI View: Guatemala's President Álvaro Colom looks powerless to deal with the urgent challenges facing his country, problems which we expect to build in the run up to the 2012 elections. The appearance of ineffective governance will further erode Guatemalans' trust in their country's democratic institutions, in our view, in turn increasing domestic political risk.
