On July 29 US District Judge Susan Bolton blocked parts of Arizona's controversial immigration law, hours before the law was due to come into effect. Sections blocked by Bolton include the requirement that police officers check the immigration status of suspects of other crimes, and criminal penalties for those who fail to carry registration papers as well as undocumented immigrants seeking work. While the injunction is only temporary measure, until the judge makes a decision on whether the law is constitutional, it will certainly be viewed as a positive development for the Mexican government, which has long voiced its criticism over the law.
