Media freedom in Venezuela is likely to take a turn for the worse after the government's recent decision to place a representative on the board of directors at the last remaining opposition-aligned television news station Golobvision . President Hugo Chávez was able to make the move following the nationalision of Banco Federal on June 14, in which he indirectly gained a 25.8% share of Globovision via seizure of Nelson Mezerhane's (the bank's president) assets. Such a political manoeuver could hamper the opposition's chances in the upcoming legislative election, which is to be held on September 26.
