Frosty Relations With Colombia
July 2010 | Ratings UpdateWe expect Ecuador's foreign relations with Colombia to remain frosty over the medium term, not least since President Rafael Correa recently made a threat to break off diplomatic ties with its Andean neighbour following accusations that Colombian agents tapped into top Ecuadorian officials' phones. Additionally, with an Ecuadorian arrest warrant still outstanding for Colombia President-elect Juan Manuel Santos (given his involvement as Defense Minister in Colombia's covert military operation on their shared border in early 2008) we see further support to suggest that the two countries will find it difficult to reconcile their differences anytime soon.
