Alfonsín Win Could Challenge Cobos 2011 Hopes

June 2010 | Ratings Update

The June 6 primary elections for the opposition Unión Civica Radical (UCR) leadership saw Ricardo Alfonsín - son of former president Raúl Alfonsín (1983-1989) - defeat Leopoldo Moreau and Federico Storani, the party's leaders since 1983. This means that Alfonsín will be well-placed to run as presidential candidate 2011, though Vice President Julio Cobos may challenge him for the UCR nomination. For now, both potential candidates have publically called for party unity, meaning that a joint slate cannot be ruled out for 2011. The strong primary election outcome, which saw Alfonsín garner 61% of the vote, suggests that he may be in advantage to the incumbent vice president to win the nomination.
