Foreign Policy Most Sensitive To Election

Long unable to attack the current administration's track record on economic policy, conservative opposition candidate for the Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira (PSDB), José Serra, has accused President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of allowing his party's left-wing ideology rather than national interest to dictate foreign policy. Serra commented on Lula's ties with the Bolivarian governments of Venezuela and Bolivia, and noted that he would look to adopt a more pragmatic course for Brazilian foreign relations if elected in October. His rival Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) candidate Dilma Rousseff, meanwhile, has pledged to continue Lula's foreign policy course. Foreign policy is among the most sensitive policy areas to be affected by October's election result, in our view.
