Step Closer To Statehood

Puerto Rico took a step towards clarifying its political status on April 29, when the US House of Representatives voted 223 to 169 to approve a measure allowing the commonwealth to set a new referendum on possible statehood or independence. The Senate now has its turn to decide. Should a referendum eventually take place, we still believe Puerto Ricans would vote in favour of official statehood, in line with Governor Luis Fortuño's own ambitions for becoming part of the US. If Puerto Rico were to become the 51st US state it would put to bed the issue which has dogged the island's political spectrum for decades.
