Evo Struggles To Appease The Left
May 2010 | Ratings UpdateBolivia's President Evo Morales is struggling to pacify one of the country's largest trade unions, as disputes over minimum wage adjustments threaten to remove a key support base. The union Central Obrera Boliviana is arguing for a 12-25% hike in the minimum wage, at least seven percentage points over the government's proposed increase (which itself is well above current inflation levels), a sign of how far Morales, himself a former union leader, must go to satisfy left-wing dissenters.
