May 2010 | Risk SummaryDiplomatic relations between Mexico and US received another blow in late April, with the US state of Arizona passing a new immigration law which encourages police to crack down on illegal immigrants. Mexican President Felipe Calderón has criticised the law as discriminatory, expressing concern that Arizona's police will be able to question anyone they reasonably suspect of being an illegal immigrant. In addition, day labourers could be arrested for finding work if they are in the US illegally, and the police may also face penalties if they do not enforce the legislation. In attempt to stave off criticism from both at home and abroad, US President Barack Obama promised to start work on a 'common-sense, comprehensive' reform of his country's immigration system, even though we believe there is little chance of passing any reform bill through congress in the near future.
