UANSUR Vote Alleviates Diplomatic Tensions
May 2010 | Ratings UpdateAfter former Argentine President Néstor Kirchner was appointed Secretary-General of the South American Nations Union (UNASUR), Uruguayan President José Mujica had to fight off opposition senator's claims that his vote in support of Kirchner was part of a deal with the Argentine government to end the protestor road block at the border crossing by the Botnia paper mill. Uruguay had previously blocked Kirchner's appointment due to Argentine support of the anti-Botnia paper mill protestors. Though domestic political infighting may persist following Kirchner's appointment as UNSAUR Secretary-General, we note that a resolution of the diplomatic stand-off and improved relations with Argentina argue well for Uruguay's political risk profile going forward.
