Seven people, including six police officers were killed in Mexico's Ciudad Juarez during a shoot-out on April 25. Police officers came under fire as they attempted to stop vehicles carrying suspected hitmen. President Felipe Calderón has employed thousands of armed police and troops in the city in an attempt to wrest control from the powerful gangs, but as yet there has been little sign of any improvement in the levels of violence, serving to highlight the resilience of drug-fuelled violence in the face of government pressure. We do not believe the country will experience an improvement in domestic security levels in 2010.
