The Bermudian economy was bound to take a pounding in 2009 given its heavy dependence on financial services and tourism, sectors whose fortunes are a direct function of the state of the world economy. The lack of diversification has come to the fore of the government with finance minister Paula Cox in late March stressing that a fresh strategy is needed. Cox highlighted areas such as green technology, shipping registry and a broader range of financial services as new economic furrows to be ploughed.
